Polish mushrooms continue to enter the English market to the chagrin of man Irish growers.
The Polish produce ultimately undercuts the Irish due to picker rates of about 1 euro per hour – the Irish simply cannot compete with that.
And it is still apparently the case that entry to the English markets is happening via the back door system – i.e. through Irish companies.
Stalker realises that business is business and it's a cutthroat world out there, survive or die.
But a less short term view might lead businesses and marketers to see that there is an interest in supporting exclusively the home grown sector - where quality is better assured, supply lines are shorter thus less costly and controls are stricter thus limiting the chances of a disease wipe-out scenario.
Creating securer conditions for the Irish grower would ultimately benefit the marketers.
