Stalker remembers the letter published in The Mushroom People in February 2002, voicing the ire of a concerned mushroom industry operator.
The correspondent poured scorn on the Irish outfit that was selling Polish mushrooms and thus undermining the Irish industry.
The correspondent didn't wish to have their name attached to the coruscating epistle, but signed it "Save The Irish Mushroom Industry".
The reason it would seem is now clear – it would seem that concerns for the native industry have been allayed and the use of Polish imports thoroughly approved by certain top Irish companies.
That's good to know – and Stalker is sure that growers throughout the land will be happy with this. Sure there's no way that this would be undermining the Irish industry.
Stalker remembers the proposed solution that the correspondent made:
"SOLUTION TO PROTECT THE FUTURE OF IRISH MUSHROOMS
Lobby all mushroom-marketing organisations in Ireland who are importing mushrooms outside Ireland by cancellation of compost and non-supply of mushrooms.
I am sure there are enough genuine compost manufacturers and mushroom marketers in Ireland who will accommodate these growers who intend to lobby these so called international mushroom traders based in Ireland and there-fore get them to give a commitment that they will discontinue to import cheap mushrooms and ruin all our livelihoods."
