Industry observers have been quick to point out an inequality in the pricing of straw when looked at from a Europe wide perspective.
Continental prices for straw are much lower than in Ireland – some observers judge that a 25% cut in the price of straw here is probably what is needed to level the playing field.
Sellers may baulk at such a pricing demand, but the economics of the situation certainly indicate a pricing reduction.
Supply has been good and is now outstripping demand.
It'll be interesting to see if the price follows the simplistic theoretical model and whether it will be enough to satisfy compost makers.
