The problem of Spent Mushroom Compost (SMC) persists and is still attracting varying methodologies for using this potentially valuable waste product from the industry.
Teagasc, Kinsealy and Bord Glas are organising three trials demonstrating the use of SMC for potato production this year. The trials are taking place on three commercial potato farms in Louth, Meath and Dublin.
The aim is to demonstrate to producers the feasibility of using SMC for potatoes and a number of growers' walks will be held. Potatoes are regarded as a good crop for using SMC, as they have a high nutrient requirement and consequently can use a lot more SMC per hectare than other crops. They are extensively grown in Meath and Dublin.
