Stalker loves a good old spy movie and apparently there's a new one out that hits the spot. Black Bag starring Irish actor, the inestimable Michael Fassbender, is getting rave reviews and is likened to the 60s spy film The Ipcress File .
The Fassbender character is linked to the Michael Caine character Harry Palmer especially by his horn rimmed specs and love of cooking.
Stalker has yet to see the new flick, but wonders, is there a scene in it where mushrooms take centre stage as they did in The Ipcress File?
Palmer meets his boss in the aisles of a proto supermarket of the time, shopping cart clacking and surveying the shelves. A conversation on tinned mushrooms, button versus the fancier French champignons sets the scene, a verbal joust for the ages. The supermarket scene from the sixties is pure cinematic magic, worth the cinema ticket price alone.
One wonders if the new movie will have a scene set in Sainsbury's or maybe a Tesco express.
Stalker would definitely recommend the earlier movie just for this scene alone - but definitely a superior and tense spy drama from the height of the cold war.
