This month 40 years ago the Reen Rover column was asking - “Flies, are you thinking about them? If not, you should be. Prevention is always better than curing. In this case, to cure the problem is costly both in loss of crop and in chemicals.” Times may have changed, and the methods used to control flies may have changed too, but the advice still stands the test of time.
The magazine also featured the mushroom house design of the future on the MacCartan farm at Carrickaness Benburb in Co. Tyrone. The design wasn’t however the one that actually became the go to standard.
Also the advertising in the magazine was way more extensive - you could get bathroom suites, Zanussi electrical appliances, Tractors and used machines and new machines (vacuum tankers and slurry pumps etc). How times have indeed changed!
