The UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility scheme, or EPR, is causing some consternation amongst the large multiple retailers.
Businesses must pay for household packaging they produce and which consumers must dispose of. M&S expect to take a hit of £40 million on the new tax.
The levy is expected to generate as much as £2 billion from the retail sector according to the British Retail Consortium.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says:”We continue to work closely with businesses on our packaging reforms, which will create 21,000 jobs and lead to more than £10billion in investment in recycling over the next decade.”
The debates around packaging are set to intensify, that is for sure.
