Met Éireann is apparently using a new supercomputer to process its weather forecasts. Expect increasing accuracy and timeliness ahead.
Any weather forecast is only ever a probabilistic interpretation of the data from weather stations - will the supercomputer improve our chances of certainty?
Stalker remembers after the last upgrade of computing power across the water in London, it seemed as though things became more uncertain. But perhaps it is the weather that has changed. The latest upgrade is based in Iceland, where it can be completely powered by renewable energy. It can handle more than 10 million observations every 24 hours, make 4,000 trillion calculations per second, and produce detailed weather predictions every hour. Can it make a cup of tea though?
