Just over 15,000 new electric vehicles have been sold in Ireland so far this year, down over 25% on the same period last year. The latest figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) reveal that 1,259 new EVs were registered last month, down over 29% on August last year.
The phenomenon of slowing EV sales is not unique to Ireland - all over Europe and in the UK EV sales have slowed dramatically. As demand has slumped though, prices have also begun to drop, with some substantial price cuts on some very beautiful motors -( EVs seem to have the very best designers).
High prices, charging, range anxiety and peripheral costs are all factors weighing into sluggish uptake.
Petrol cars continue to lead the new car market at over 31 percent, followed by diesel at 23 percent.
Hybrid petrol electric cars have a market share of almost 21 percent..
