A rebound in battery electric vehicle sales and the continuing popularity of plug-in hybrids, has kept UK new car registrations rising for the 22nd month in a row.
A total of 147,000 cars were registered in Britain last month. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said it was the best May since 2021, although the numbers are still down by about a fifth on the pre-pandemic May of 2019.
All forms of electrified vehicles showed significant growth last month.
Sales of hybrids, cars with a petrol engine but with the ability to travel a few miles in zero emission mode, rose by about 10 per cent for 13 per cent market share.
