A study in the medical journal the Lancet has suggested that ultra-processed vegan food can increase the risk of heart death.
The study of 118,000 middle-aged and older Britons found that plant-based diets can protect the heart – but only if they are based on whole foods.
The research by Sao Paulo University and Imperial College London, funded by the World Cancer Research Fund, assessed the diets of adults aged 40 to 69 and linked them to hospital data for almost a decade.
Sticking to the fresh produce seems to be the way to go these days - but it is hard to avoid the lure of the ultra- handy, tastefully packaged and always alluring burgers, pasties, falafels and the like. UPFs or no, they tend to be very tasty.
