Dame Shirley Conran, the designer, journalist, novelist and campaigner, who has died aged 91, in her “zig-zag career” delighted in launching high-profile challenges to the norms that she believed constrained women of her generation.
Her 1975 bestseller Superwoman, including her mantra “life is too short to stuff a mushroom”, sought to liberate women from the tyranny of housework.
