Electric car sales have stalled in Ireland according to latest reports, meanwhile in Europe reports indicate that sales have dropped substantially.
According to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) just under 6000 new EVs were sold here in Ireland this year to date, with the rate of sales declining rapidly since January.
Across Europe last month electric car sales plummeted as demand dried up.
It seems that sales of battery-powered cars dropped by 11.3pc as demand in Germany, Europe’s largest economy, plunged by 28.9pc, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Tesla have all reported falling electric vehicle sales in the first three months of the year.
As with the wild mushroom wag - the deadly price is one of the key factors. Governments tinkering with EV incentives doesn’t help either. And, as ever, the range anxiety problem still persists.
Perhaps the new wave of cheaper Chinese BEVs being imported to the EU will turn the decline around.
