The RTE Horticultural show Home Grown featured a piece on exotic mushrooms being grown in Co.Offaly. Growers Joe and Dolores Gorman, well known in the mushroom industry were featured amongst their polytunnels, growing exotics like shitake, maitake and king oyster mushrooms. The array of beautiful exotic mushrooms on shelving in the growing house was pretty spectacular.
The couple are one of the first entities growing exotics in Ireland, and they are growing the nascent market for the fantastical fungi.
It’s a labour intensive industry and the couple believe there is scope for much growth, including in the dried and powdered mushroom categories.
As Joe said, he realised he has “mushrooms in the blood” as he spoke emotionally, of the ups and downs of the mushroom industry, over the years.
