Mushrooms accounted for 50 percent of the total horticulture exports from Ireland according to the Bord Bia export report this month.
Total mushroom exports came to €145 million which represented a 6 percent decrease in mushroom sales. In 2023, the total export value of horticulture and cereals from Ireland was €295 million.
According to the report, the biggest factor affecting the mushroom sector in 2023 was the noticeable slowdown in the UK economy. However the report noted that there may be more opportunities in loose mushrooms, as shoppers avoid plastic packaging, and purchase smaller amounts. Organic mushrooms struggled, due to higher prices . Across the sector, while labour availability remains a challenge. Bord Bia CEO said:"Looking ahead, market volatility and inflation, although slowly easing, will continue to be two key factors for this year, while input and labour costs remain a risk to competitiveness. The market for Irish food, drink and horticulture exports will remain challenged this year.”
