Interesting to note the move by UK multiple Sainsbury’s ditching the use of plastic punnets for mushrooms and saving an estimated 775 tonnes of plastic use each year.
The new cardboard punnets are meant to be easily recyclable through domestic recycling collections.
"As part of our Plan for Better commitments, we are trying to reduce plastic packaging across our own brand ranges," said Claire Hughes, director of product and innovation at Sainsbury's. "We are delighted to introduce cardboard punnets for our own-brand mushrooms. Making a collective effort with suppliers at increasing recycled content and recyclability for all customers has helped achieve our biggest ever plastics removal so far.”
