The news that Google DeepMind AI has discovered millions of new materials is startling.
A.k.a the GNoME system, it can design the structure of new crystal substances that can be autonomously created in labs by robots.
The interesting thing about these new materials, they will hopefully be of use in designing carbon storage and enhancing EV battery technology and the like.
It’s as if the futuristic materials of sci-fi scenarios have just been made real overnight. Realistically scientists expect only 380,000 new materials from the latest discoveries - but that would have taken centuries at the pace of discovery seen in the past decade.
