Met Eireann confirmed that this March was the wettest on record with an average of 173.3mm of rainfall across the country - this eclipsed the previous record set in March 2019. The figure was 169 percent of the 1981-2010 long term average.
England had its wettest March since 1981 according to Met Office figures. After the driest February in 30 years, the unsettled month just passed has managed to drop 4.3 inches (111.3 mm) of rain on England, while Wales and Northern Ireland also had one of their top 10 wettest Marches on record.
Maybe it is just Stalker’s imagination, but the way in which the rain is falling seems different too. The very last day of March the rain came on steady and keep falling heavily for 12 hours where Stalker was located. It sounded more like tropical rainfall than typical Irish rainfall.
Mind you the Irish language is peppered with phrases for types of rain - like the Inuit language with snow. As they say in some parts -“Tá sé ag cur,”- you don’t even have to use the word for rain for the meaning to be understood.
