Some scientists in Israel have conducted some stress tests on tomato plants and have found that the plants can sound off if they’re thirsty. It seems that plants can emit ultrasonic sounds and vibrations - and when put under stress, by not being watered properly - the plants do go into overdrive. Imagine the house of mushrooms crying out for enough moisture to grow. It all sounds reminiscent of a Tales of the Unexpected from yesteryear. The scientists are trying to discover who or what might be listening for the sounds of parched plants. “The fact that plants are making these sounds opens a whole new avenue of opportunities for communication, eavesdropping, and exploration of these ‘sounds’,” said Yossi Yovel, a neuro-ecologist at Tel Aviv UNiversity and co-author of the study.
