Stalker was intrigued by a newspaper item on what constitutes the Full English fry, and specifically what percentage of people think what foodstuffs are a prerequisite for a fry-up to be called a Full English.
Bacon was tops at 89% of people who thought certain items should feature in a full english. Sausage came in second at 82%. Mushrooms were languishing a bit at 48% - although Stalker would expect mushrooms on a fry 100%, definitely an Ulster fry.
Beans were at 71%, toast at 73%, fried egg 65%, hash brown at 60% and black pudding at 35%. One food journalist quoted - Felicity Cloake, author of Red Sauce, Brown Sauce : A British Breakfast Odyssey - said that: “For me, the essential items of a Full English are bacon, egg, sausage, black pudding, grilled or tinned tomatoes, fried mushrooms and then some carb to soak up all the delicious grease.”
For the Ulster fry that last item would be typically soda farl or potato bread. One can feel one’s mouth watering at the thought of it all. Yum!
