Although chilly in these northern climes, the year of 2023 started with New Year's day heat records being smashed all over the continent of Europe.
Even in Poland no stranger to the cold weather, the highest temperature on January 1 was 5 C in excess of the pervious record. Highs were also recorded in Germany and the Czech Republic, Denmark and The Netherlands.
Temperature records tend to be broken by just a few fractions of a degree, but the 18.9C record set in Warsaw was 5.1C above the previous high set in 1993.
Truly the weather this winter has been mostly clement even throughout the UK and Ireland, barring the polar vortex snap in December.
