As all growers in the country are aware the prices for their produce have quite literally gone through the floor. There are several theories floating around within the industry as to why this is the case – but none are of any comfort to growers that have been left high and dry by the marketing companies in the face of the glut of produce on the market.
Badly hit have been producers of flats in particular. Growers who have geared their operations towards the growing of flats following the predictive genius of some marketing types have now been dealt "a kick in the teeth" as one observer put it.
And of course the industry as a whole will suffer from the knock–on effects. Orders for compost and other peripherals are already being affected.
Once again the finger of suspicion within the growing community will be pointed towards the big supermarkets and their slash and burn tactics towards small producers.
