A lot of folk go mushroom foraging in these autumnal months - it’s a great pastime in the great outdoors.
Apart from the problem of potentially misidentifying a mushroom - which has often been warned about in these pages, there is another danger lurking out there in the woodlands and grasses.
The chance of being bitten by a tick and getting infected by a tick borne infection (TBI) has certainly increased in Ireland in recent years. Foragers are reminded to be tick aware and take preventative measures while out in the natural environment.
Also checking for ticks after a fungi foray is advisable. Avoiding any TBI, and especially Lyme Disease is a no brainer!
So watch out for the tiny arachnids and act with prudence in the field, and enjoy yourself out there.
