The freakish hot weather that has hit Europe and the UK over these summer months is threatening the vegetable harvest.
Farmers have warned that record-breaking temperatures and drought have ruined production.
Onions, potatoes, carrots and lettuces are likely to be affected. Farmers have also expressed concerns about the poor harvest for barley , oats and peas.
Jack Ward, the chief executive of the British Growers Association, said that “ Britain could be in a major deficit position”, where domestic supplies cannot meet demand.
