Scientists in Australia have discovered that superworms love, and even grow on, a diet of only polystyrene, aka styrofoam.
The superworm Zophobas morio apparently thrives on the stuff, although the diet of styrofoam did have some negative impacts on the worm's gut microbiome, not surprisingly!
With the potential to find enzymes that could help recycle this omnipresent plastic, it is hoped that there is the potential to recycle this type of plastic into new plastic products, thus reducing the need for virgin plastic.
