In the UK Ministers are being urged to look at “best before” labels for fresh produce. Growers are calling for a review of the labelling system which they claim leads households to throw away as much as 20 percent of the fruit and veg they are buying.
The Food Standards Agency says the best before labelling is about “quality and not safety”. It says “ the food will be safe to eat after this date but may not be at it's best.” However as we all know, “Use By” dates show when perishable items are no longer safe to eat.
