A French truffle producer has broken new ground by putting a prize fungus in an online auction that will accept bids with cryptocurrencies.
In another departure from the traditionally conservative world of truffles, the winning bidder will for the first time obtain a non-fungible token, a digital proof of ownership. The 2.8lb truffle was found by a pig called Pupuce on a farm in Saint-Cirq-Madelon in southwest France.
The non-fungible token will come in useful if the winning bidder wants to cut up and sell the truffle piece by piece, according to the producer. Each purchaser would be able to prove that they owned part of the original truffle.
