Scientific researchers at Cambridge University are warning that spring could soon start in February.
The scientists have been looking at the average first-flowering dates between 1753 and 1986 and between 1986 and 2019. The records show that the average first-flowering dates arrive almost a full month earlier. Premature blooming in flowers can cause an “ecological mismatch”.
Plants, insects and birds have co-evolved to depend on one another in perfect synchronicity. But if certain species of plant suddenly burst into flower at the wrong time it can starve insects, and the birds that depend on them - of vital food sources and throw the whole system out of sync.
Climate change is causing perceptible changes to the seasons already it seems - the date of spring having sprung may have to be shifted if things carry on this way!
