Mid-January oil prices rose above $85 per barrel, not long after the Opec+ alliance of big producer nations signalled that it expected the Omicron coronavirus variant to have only a limited impact on demand.
The alliance agreed to press ahead with a planned 400,000 barrels per day production increase from February.
The price of brent crude was touching $89 + by the 21st of January.
