The Earth’s vast networks of underground fungi are set to be mapped for the first time in order to learn more about their extraordinary ability to store carbon and boost conservation efforts.
Globally the length of fungal mycelium in the top 10cm of soil is estimated to be more than 450 quadrillion kilometers, or about half the width of our galaxy!
“We really need to think more about fungi and the relationships they maintain and what they're able to do.
There’s a wonderful statistic - that there could be as much as 6 million fungal species of which we‘ve only described around 6 to 8 percent.”
