In September the Forestry Commission in the UK confirmed the first reported case of a new disease in western hemlock and douglas fir trees in Cornwall.
Caused by Phytophthora pluvialis, a fungus-like microorganism known to infect a range of tree species.
Normally a cold winter would be enough to kill off such a disease, but with milder temperatures the fear is that the microorganisms will survive.
