France is set to ban plastic wrapping on commonly sold fruit and veg from January 1st next year.
The French government has listed 30 products that must be sold loose, or in cardboard or other recyclable containers if the weight is less than 1.5 kg.
All other fruit and veg will follow with an end to plastic packaging by July 2023 for cherry tomatoes, green beans and peaches, and by 2025 for asparagus, mushrooms and cherries. Plastic will be banned from most items by July 2026.
The change is part of a circular economy law brought in last year to recycle resources and cut waste. Where La Belle France leads, will others follow?
