The pace of robotics in the mushroom industry is sure to increase exponentially as shortages of workers in many sectors spurs the growth of automation.
In the US, Penn State University has recently received a grant worth $4 million to improve automation in the local agriculture sector, and specifically on mushroom farms.
A team of plant pathologists, agricultural and biological engineers, agricultural economists, and information technologists from Penn State and the University of Maryland are set to address these challenges through agricultural technology innovations. The project will build on previous Penn State research on robotic mushroom harvesting.
There could yet be an explosion of robots on US mushroom farms.
Already in Europe the advance of the robots has begun.
