During the Seanad debate last month that included the peat harvest contretemps, the Minister referred to ongoing research evaluating possible alternatives to peat as a medium for growing mushrooms.
Indeed research into alternative growing media has been happening ever since Stalker began note-making on the sector.
However to date no medium has ever come close to matching the quality of pure Irish peat for the growing of mushrooms.
