Earlier this year GCHQ in the UK gave its first official guidance to farmers after warning that modern digitally-run farms have become a target for hackers.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the public arm of the spy agency, said that criminals were increasingly attacking remote sensors and GPS trackers that farmers used to watch over their flocks and crops. Hackers were also looking to get into the software that farmers used to manage their increasingly sophisticated technology, the agency warned.
After the massive hacking event that has floored the HSE in Ireland, farmers here too must be on their guard, as agriculture here in Ireland is also top of the list for hacking attempts.
Farmers are urged to keep the software that runs their devices up to date to make them harder to infiltrate.
