BBC 2 carried an interesting mushroom based programme on Wednesday May 19th. It was an absorbing documentary following the course over 16 months of a ground-breaking new trial testing the effects of psilocybin against an industry standard antidepressant on a group of participants with clinical depression.
A team led by Professor David McNutt, of Imperial College London, are engaged in this cutting-edge research that could help thousands of sufferers of depression nationwide and even globally.
The effectiveness of the psilocybin to reset the depressive mind was vividly explored in the programme. When one saw the successful treatment of patients with long standing and stubborn depression, some changed utterly by the trial, it is hard to imagine that psilocybin will not form a new generation of pharmacological treatments for severe depression.
