In April 20 years ago - 2001 A.D. a new scare was acting as a unifying force. Reports of a salmonella outbreak in mushrooms in the national media set alarm bells ringing throughout the Irish mushroom growing community.
Meanwhile another scare was causing all aspects of mushroom farm life to be challenged, the Foot and Mouth disease crisis was in full swing. Mushroom collection, compost delivery, spawn delivery and casing delivery were all affected. New controls were in place to stop the spread of the virus...sounds very familiar now.
Back then David Totten was reminiscing on twenty years in the mushroom business and the trials and tribulations of getting an international company supplying mushroom equipment the world over. There was plenty more to come on that front!
