Thirty years ago in 1991, the April edition of The Mushroom People carried the front page headline - Growing Discontent.
Apparently at the time there was increasing discontent among growers concerning the state of their business. Returns were poor and a depressed British market meant there was a severe drop in demand - “ There’s something wrong fundamentally, “ said one irate grower. “This is a hands on industry. You can lose your grip if there’s too much paper-work between you and the bags!”
Also reported in the edition was the opening of the new mushroom research facility the previous month at the Northern Ireland Horticulture and Plant Breeding Station, Loughgall.
The new unit was reported as the most up to date facility in the British Isles for Research and Development into the bag system of mushroom growing!
