Early February saw the spread of Saharan dust from the African desert up over the continent of Europe. There was a sharp rise in pollution from Saharan dust in northern Spain and Southern France. The air currents that spread the dust obviously didn’t penetrate quite so much to the outer western fringe of Europe where we reside.
Nevertheless the advice of old was to make sure to keep doors shut in mushroom houses, to lessen the chance of foreign pathogens entering the mushroom growing environment. It still makes good sense.
When you see dust particulate on your car windscreen of a morning, it’s too late to act then of course.
Apparently 14 million tonnes of Saharan dust have been deposited over continental Europe and the UK and Ireland in the past week up to the end of February.
