2020 was the hottest year on record for Europe according to EU scientists figures from the Copernicus Project, the EU’s observation programme, show that average temperatures last year outdstripped the record set in 2019 by 0.4C.
Winter 2019-20 and autumn 2020 were also the warmest recorded, the scientists said. Globally 2020 tied with 2016 as the warmest year on record.
Carlo Buontempo director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service said: “ It is another reminder of the urgency of ambitious emissions reductions to prevent adverse climate impacts in the future.”
8 of the 10 warmest years on record have occurred in the past decade. Global temperatures have risen 0.2C per decade since 1970, with the past six years being the warmest since records began.
