Stalker inadvertently caught a small segment of the BBC Autumn Watch television programme at the end of October.
The four presenters were each trying to out vie each other as to the strangest autumnal sight or sound.
Chris Packham’s choice was an ethereal sound reminiscent of a BBC Radiophonic Workshop melody for Doctor Who back in the 1960s.
None of the others could identify the sound.
It came from a shiitake mushroom! The sound was recorded by Michael Prime, a bio composer - apparently it is the sound of the mycelial strands expanding and growing.
It was every eerie and otherworldly - something that fungi are often described as. As Chris Packham put it - “The sound of mushrooms warbling in the night.”
