Monaghan Mushrooms featured heavily on Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped programme on the 14th of January. The Food Unwrapped Does Breakfast aired primetime 8pm on the channel. One of the presenters travelled to Tyholland Mushrooms in Co.Monaghan to investigate how mushrooms get their vitamin D content.
Andrew Shanks the manager at Tyholland showed the programme makers around the unit, the huge gleaming growing shed, the packing hall, and part of the all important process of zapping the ‘shrooms with UV light to boost the Vitamin D content. The UV light activates the ergosterol in the mushrooms which gives the produce the boosted vitamin D content.
Later in the programme mushrooms were compared with other foodstuffs for value in delivering a daily dose of the essential vitamin. The mushrooms fared well against the other foods - but even Stalker would baulk at eating a plate full of mushrooms everyday!
It was however a pretty fantastic bit of PR for the mushroom industry and specifically for Monaghan Mushrooms.
