Stalker was intrigued to read about an experiment which took place in space. The experiment, to test growth patterns of Enoki mushrooms, was chosen along with 37 other experiments for Mission 13 on the International Space Station as part of a study on the effects of microgravity on organisms.
Elsewhere, in a 30-day simulation aimed at understanding life on other planets, NASA researchers found fungi came along for the proverbial ride – and set up colonies of their own. Earth is awash with airborne pollens, spores, toxins and other microorganisms, both benign and malignant – and they follow humans wherever they go, even space.
Perhaps the mushrooms in space theme of the recent Star Trek Discovery series wasn’t as far-fetched as it first seemed.
