Looking back at August 1999 there was plenty going on the industry at that time.
Even though there was aa apparent slump in the industry - the Polish industry was being seen as a nascent threat to UK supply by Irish growers.
The perennial problem of straw prices were engaging the attention of composters, with shortages being experienced. Black bag syndrome was an affliction doing the rounds at the time in some mushroom units.
Jumping forward ten years to 2009 - Unimush were adding value to mushrooms. The well known Amycel rep Eilin Connolly was leaving the industry. Growers were exiting the industry as well at the time, as a period of consolidation set in. Plans for a biomass plant that would use 3.8 million litres of water a day from Lough Neagh was exercising minds. And there were adverts for compost to come from the Belgium company Stercx. Even ten years ago seems like a long time ago!
