The Mushroom Business magazine carried some interesting photos and a report from a Belgian mushroom farm using tilting mushroom beds which help pickers pick more easily.
There was also a robotic picking arm which sliced stem ends and uses suction pads to place the mushrooms in punnets for grading. The future of robotic assistance on mushroom farms is already here.
As ever though it seems as though the robotic aspect will never fully replace the human touch.
MInd you the Belgian owner reports that the system cuts picking costs by between 50 and 70 percent. That’s some saving right there!
