Governments left, right and centre have been announcing urgent action on climate change.
Notice how the language has also changed in the whole debate on climate change - it is now climate emergency, or crisis, or breakdown. Global warming is now being referred to as global heating - subtle word changes, but definitely ramping up the rhetoric.
Sometimes one does feel like the frog sitting in the pan of water as it heats up to a boil. Ireland’s government action plan was announced in mid-June.
“The Plan clearly identifies the nature and scale of the challenge. It outlines the current state of play across key sectors including Electricity, Transport, Built Environment, Industry and Agriculture and charts a course towards ambitious decarbonisation targets.”
Already companies within the mushroom industry in Ireland have been striving to achieve carbon neutral production, with investment in every area of production. Energy of course is one of the main areas - but also water consumption within the industry is a challenge too.
No doubt there is a long way to go as a country, and an industry, to achieving complete zero emissions and decarbonisation - but it is doable within the time frame to 2050, if not before.
