So it’s all change at the top of the UK government and ruling Conservative party. PM Theresa May continues in a caretaker role until the next candidate takes the top spot, presumably by the middle of July.
In the meantime Irish officials accelerate their preparations for a no-deal Brexit. Once again we’re into uncharted and uncertain territory caused by the 2016 referendum result. Will a shuffling of the personnel at the top result in clarity, resolve and resolution? One shouldn’t think so. Might a general election sort out the impasse? Perhaps. Or another referendum? Unlikely.
Brexit is like the story that is going to run and run. Even with an exit, agreed or unagreed by Halloween - the upheavals and uncertainty are going to persist.
Sterling will remain weakened until there is some sort of resolution. Currently trading at £1 for €1.12, doubtless there will be upswings and downswings on every nuance and phrase from the political dramatis personae.
