Normally a foul April was seen as a predictor of summer.
There is the spake “ April showers bring forth May Flowers, or another “ A cold April the barn will fill”. Or indeed another: “If the first three days in April be foggy, rain in June will make the lanes boggy.”
So far though this April has defied bad prognostications for summer weather with plenty of sunshine and even some much appreciated warmth. Record temperatures for the Easter weekend in Ireland and the UK lead to gorse and moors fires in many places.
Our ancestors were baffled by the regularity of bad weather in April, but this year we seem to have gotten off lightly - with just some high winds and coolness in the middle of the month.
