Looking back 30 years ago to April 1989, the front page of the magazine had a report on “Irish expansion worries MGA”.
UK growers were worried by the rapid expansion of the Irish mushroom industry back then. There was also, unbelievably, a Northern Ireland mushroom growers contingent visiting Argentina.
Jumping forward a decade to 1999, the output of the Irish mushroom industry was worth £84 million and the Minister of State for agriculture and Food Mr Noel Davern stated - “The Irish industry is the dominant supplier to the UK Market.”
Scroll forward another 10 years to 2009, back then Stalker noted that sterling was sliding towards parity with the euro putting a strain on potential demand for Irish mushrooms.
Once again, plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.
