Gerard Reilly, the current IFA mushroom chair, has said that growers were very concerned about the increase in the cost of compost.
Quoted in the Farmers Journal he said ”€230/t is the highest price that I have ever been asked to pay for compost.”
He went on to say that growers who supply the Irish market through CMP - the Monaghan-based producer organisation - had notified retailers of a price increase. “We had no choice but we have got a good response from retailers.”
The knock-on effect of the extreme weather conditions that have occurred this year are certainly beginning to be felt.
